Author biography

Markus Zusak was born in Sydney, Australia in 1975 to an Austrian father and German mother. Growing up hearing stories about Nazi Germany, and about Jews being marched through his mother’s small, German town served as the inspiration behind writing his internationally bestselling novel The Book Thief. He always knew it was a story he wanted to tell, and now he is thrilled to be able to travel around the world and discuss his work and his life as a writer to all who have embraced his unforgettable novels. Markus resides in Sydney with his family.
